Paint It Black

Aktualisiert: vor 3 Tagen

I see a wooden box and want to...

Like the Rolling Stones' 1966 song, the rebuild of the Orangutan 96 is very popular. Despite the wide front, the design of John DeVore's speaker is just good because of the black back.

Production of some orders is nearly finished, and the stunning baffles are getting their black behinds and stands.

A lot of grinding needs to be done before all the paint jobs.

All stands are made of ash wood. Six of the boxes are specially veneered in ash to create a nice soothing textural appearance when stained black. This was the customer's request, and the result looks amazing.

On the left is classic birch plywood and on the right is black-stained and oiled veneer. Even Mercedes uses this surface in its AMG line.

For staining, Ligno Color has proven itself effective. Sadly, their 2K-Oil couldn't convince us as it was far too sticky. So we switched back to Rubio Monocoat, which produces excellent results. Another new feature is the extra-fine chisel at the first picture. A customer told me about some stripes, but I'd like to achieve the highest possible surface quality by hand. So good tools are expensive, but the guys at Kremer share the same enthusiasm for good craftsmanship and we must support each other.

There is no other comparable surface treatment that comes with such valuable appearance and haptics. And I really tried a lot to shorten the process.

After all, it was a week's work, and I'm very grateful for all the support in this case. Last but not least, thanks to all the waiting customers.

Another task involving black behinds is to glue the compensation magnet to the back.

Now that the damping is complete, there are not many steps left before the final assembly.

Unlike the lyrics of the Rolling Stones' song, I'm definitely not depressed. I have so many boxes that will soon find their way to their future listeners. I hope some of them play 'Paint It Black'.
